I recently had to amend my 2015 tax returns, which were originally filed online. Apparently there's no way to amend a return online – you have to download the software. Okay, fair enough.
If you're on Windows, you can just go to the website and find the download link for the version you need. But if you're on a Mac, you have to fill out a form to request a download link. After a few days, you'll receive an email with a link to the download and a one-time access code – that's right, if the download fails for any reason, you have to request a new link and wait all over again.
So I go through that BS and get the Mac app. I launch it, it runs through the setup/registration process, and then boom – instantly crashes. Tried it again, same thing. Rebooted, same thing. Copied the app over to a different Mac (because I already used my one allotted download), same thing.
I figure since this is happening on two different Macs that I must not be the only person encountering this problem. So I search around and eventually come across a post on the TurboTax support forums describing this exact issue – TurboTax 2015 instantly crashing on macOS 10.13.4 after registration. Since the 2015 app is no longer updated, the workaround is to download and run a shell script that fixes whatever it is that's causing the crash. Okay, great, at least there's a fix!
I click the download link for the shell script – broken link.
So I dig around some more and eventually find a different post, with a different link to the shell script, that someone else was kind enough to upload because the 'official' post from TurboTax was never updated with a working link. I run that and finally I can launch the app without it crashing.
Now I can finally amend one of my state returns, which is what I intended to do an hour and a half ago (well, actually three days ago including waiting for the download link).
Now the problem is that because I filed in multiple states that year, the return won't even open unless the add-ons for each state are installed, and you only get one for free. So even though I was only editing one return, I had to spend $50 on the add-on for the other state that I wasn't editing, just to get the file to open.
...oh, and then I discovered that I had actually filed correctly and didn't need to make any amendments in the first place, but that part's my fault

The tax season is one of the most dreaded parts of the year for many Americans. With a Turbotax account as help, though, it can go by much more smoothly.

Turbotax app helps you file your US taxes. It takes you through the process step-by-step, ensuring you avoid common pitfalls.
Turbotax Mac 2018 App Crash Free
If you have to fill out simple tax returns, but dread the process, you'll love Turbotax. It takes you through the process and makes all the calculations along the way, checking your return for errors and filling in the blanks automatically.
Having completed your return, you can file it electronically or decide to print it on IRS-approved paper sheets. This makes the refund process that much faster.
Turbotax also serves as an advisor, pointing out where you can save, linking you to handbooks, planners, video guides, and official IRS publications.
The program is not free, at least initially. The costs depend on the type of return you have to file. However, there is a Turbotax free edition for specific users.
The program ensures the safety of its customers by allowing them to add passwords or choose to encrypt their data. The app also features fraud-protection measures.
Where can you run this program?
You can run Turbotax on Windows 7 and Windows 10, as well as Mac devices versions X and up and through a web application.
Is there a better alternative?
No. Turbotax is an accurate, well-researched bundle of tools that covers all the bases. However, you could try IRS2Go, Credit Karma Tax, or H&R block instead - these are all good options and can be cheaper.
Our take
Find My Turbotax 2018
Turbotax is a useful tool to have for the tax season. Private persons who don’t feel like hiring a professional can find it super helpful.
Should you download it?
Yes, especially if you’re not big on finances and don’t have to file a very complex tax return. If you have State-specific requirements, it won’t be enough.
